the greatest abundance on this earth!the greatest abundance on this earth!

Africa's iconic animals are the source which draws us to this great repository of game.

friends take care!friends take care!Africa holds, in our minds, the worlds greatest variety of animal species even though in reality other continents rank higher from a numbers viewpoint.

It is the last place on earth where the great beasts, the mega-fauna of earth, still reign supreme in their natural undisturbed habitat. So too is it the domain of the mighty large predators, the kings and lords of the African jungle and savanna, the super-cats.

Yet while most of us are enthralled by those that are big and powerful and appear to draw at our heartstrings, it is the other varied and unnoticed plethora of animals: reptiles, birds, fishes, insects that make up Africa as it is today! For many it still remains the dark continent so tellingly revealed by Marlow in Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness', a continent which brings out the very best in man yet throws to the fore, his deepest inhibitions and greed.

The Africa of today has been overrun with civil wars and famine, disease plagues everyone and prosperity is but only a dim hope on a burning horizon. We are scared to open our eyes to the real Africa, still too raw and untamed even for those who care to travel there, we look over the waters in disdain, with a disconnected humanity that reveals our core as a westernized culture - we tend to care more for Africa's wildlife, her vast untrammeled space while the compassion in us for our own kind lays trodden down and hidden.

So it will be - the wild creatures are our concern, they are our enjoyment and they are our harvest. This is the reality and without much further argument it is these animals which draw us as hunters, much as they did the very first explorers, to seek them out and to partake in the experience of hunting in this vast continent.

Here is some advice and comment in hunting the many varied species on offer in Africa. Remember this, there is a difference in each country and often simply according to the habitat, not all species exhibit the same behavior all the time.

You should also remember that each country offers a different type of hunting experience, not all are the same so if you're the collecting type then a game ranch will not bother you while fences do put off the more altruistic type of hunter who is looking for the true African experience (whatever that may be!).

There are countries where you can hunt anything, literally, even those species that have long disappeared from their home ranges - seriously, this is possible in the southern African countries. BUT if you're looking for the Hemingway or Selous type of experience then you'll have to venture into what you may consider Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' and at stake will be that part of your soul that demands a code of self restraint - the one where you as hunter acts solely for yourself, not for observers or bystanders but for your own moral and ethical code!
